2 Things Parents Should Be Looking For In Their Child

As a parent, your main concern is the health and safety of your child. But at times it could be hard to know what to look for, especially in small babies. Luckily, with the proper education you can be sure that you know what to look for in your child for problems. Here are some symptoms of serious problems that you should be on the look out for.

1. Seizures

One thing that many people don't understand about infants and children is that their seizures look different than adults. With an adult who has a seizure you would expect them to fall to the ground and start to convulse. It would be a violent thing, and it would be hard to miss. With an infant or a child it doesn't always look that way. In some cases they have something called absent seizures, which means that they zone out and are unresponsive for a period of time. They still have muscle tension in some cases, so they might be sitting up straight while they do it, or they could fall to the ground, but there may be no shaking.

Another way that a child may have a seizure it to pull all of their muscles into a fetal position for just a short moment and then do it continually, like 3-5 times in a row. This is most common for infants. If you see your child doing this, go to the doctor right way.

2. Constant Rash or Runny Nose

Another thing you should be looking for in your child is if they are constantly dealing with rashes, like eczema, and runny noses. This is one of the main signs of children with allergies. Your child may not show a full-blown reaction, like anaphylaxis, but they still may deal with allergies that present themselves in more subtle ways. If your child is allergic to something like milk, it could be making them sick, but they are unable to tell you because they are too young. So it is up to the parent to look for more subtle signs and make sure the child is protected. If your child seems to always have a runny nose, especially if it is a clear runny nose, then you need to talk to the doctor about possible allergies.

These are just two things to be looking for in your child. If you stay on top of your well-child check ups and are communicating with a doctor, like one at Northeast Wyoming Pediatric Associates Pc, you should be able to detect things early on.
